6 Tips for Balancing Sports, School, and a Social Life

Being a student is a full-time job and at times it can be stressful and a bit overwhelming. It can be even more hectic if you are trying to balance your schoolwork and study time with extracurricular activities and your social life outside of school. Figuring out the best way to balance everything is a skill that will benefit you long after graduation. So, what are some of the best ways to stay organized and stress-free when life gets busy?

Here are some tips that may help:

Time Management
To help manage your time wisely, you must keep in mind your known schedule and required responsibilities. Things such as scheduled practices, games, competitions, and school are already known and scheduled for you. By adding these known commitments to your calendar or planner, you can figure out exactly how much time to devote to homework, study, and relaxation.

Stay organized
Organization is key when balancing a busy lifestyle. Use a calendar or planner to keep track of when schoolwork and projects are due, test and quiz days, practices, and game days or competitions. It’s an easy way to keep track of your everyday obligations and allows you to plan out your week ahead of time in order to prepare yourself for what’s to come. Create a routine that works best for you and your busy schedule!

Take Advantage of Helpful Resources
Many schools require passing grades in order to be involved in sports, marching band, color guard, and other extracurricular activities. Therefore, they may offer and provide students with opportunities to help them succeed in their academics. Take advantage of extra credit opportunities and study hall periods to help keep your grades up. Ask for help when needed or have a tutor help with difficult subjects.

Don’t procrastinate
Stay ahead and do your schoolwork when it is assigned and don’t wait until the last minute to study for exams.

Get your friends involved and stay motivated
More than likely your friends are also working to balance their academics and activities. Come together with study sessions and help one another with homework or studying for exams by comparing notes and lessons.

Use weekends to both relax and get ahead
Use the weekend wisely! Take this time away from school to catch up forget ahead of schoolwork or practice. Don’t forget to only make time for friends and family, but for yourself as well. With all this hard work, you’ve earned it!

These are just a few tips to consider when your daily schedule starts to get overwhelming. Time management and organization is the key to lessen the stress of a busy life but figuring out what works best for you is really what it’s all about when balancing school, extracurricular activities, and friends.
